Alixandra Gould Photography on creating a stunning set of timeless wedding images for Julia & Elgin at Airship37
Alixandra Gould Photography shares her thoughts and expertise on photographing the stylish modern wedding of Julia and Elgin at Airship37 wedding venue Toronto.
There were some cultural traditions at this joyous wedding. How did you prepare to capture these moments in a meaningful way?
The tea ceremony is a very important cultural tradition in Chinese weddings. I prepare by getting to know who the significant members of the family are, and making sure I capture the exchange.
You speak about using a classic style that will stand the test of time when photographing weddings. How did this approach work for you in photographing this lovely wedding?
This wedding had a lot of very trendy, contemporary elements. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be captured in a timeless way. The choices I make when it comes to lighting, posing, and backdrop create a sense of timelessness to the imagery.
What were some of the key conversations you had with the wedding couple before their big day and how did these exchanges manifest in such a success in capturing their wedding?
I always ask my couples what is most important to them when it comes to their photographs. Every wedding and every client is different, so you can’t approach each wedding with the exact same approach. Having an honest conversation about the moments, people and elements of the day that are important to them is crucial when providing a custom experience.
It was apparent that the experience of the couples family and friends was very important to the couple. What are some of your techniques and methods for catching the key moments of the celebration?
You just have to be on your game! Always being ready to jump up and capture the unexpected emotional, candid moments is key. And having a detailed schedule ahead of time really helps me anticipate when those moments may arise.
You took some gorgeous shots of the couple in the hangar space at Airship37 when it was all set up for the wedding ceremony. What were your thoughts when you first reviewed them?
I LOVE them shots. You don’t often get the opportunity to photograph a couple in the space they saw your vows without all of their guests in there too. But because Airship staff had it all set up and ready to go, we were able to get these shots. They’re really nice to have because not only did the couple spend a lot of time and effort designing this space, but these images provide a more intimate look at the space where the committed themselves to one another.
How would you describe the wedding style that Julia and Elgin chose and how did you respond with your photography of their wedding?
Their style was colourful, trendy, and joyous. I responded by simply documented what they created in an honest and real way.
The evening shots taken of the wedding couple and their guests were beautifully done. They have a beautiful cinematic quality and a fantastic energetic quality How did you plan for this setting?
Airship37 is super easy space to light. With all of the white walls and ceiling, I used bounce flash to create a natural lighting effect. And I jump at the chance to photograph anything that involves sparklers, like they did with their first dance. It’s such a magical form of light.
The colour palette for the wedding decor was so well integrated and worked effectively with the modern industrial setting of the venue. How did you approach capturing these efforts?
Because the Airship37 space is kind of like one big blank canvas, the wedding decor and colours can really stand out and shine. I tried to have a pop of colour in every shot, because that was the theme.
You have created a very dynamic blog that has great insider tips for wedding couples as well as creative professionals. What was the inspiration for this blog and what are some of the experiences you have had with your blog?
I have two main audiences for my blog: engaged couples and other photographers.
For the engaged couples, I wanted to create a resource for them with real, insider tips from someone who’s seen a LOT of weddings. I know what works on a wedding day, both visually and logistically, and what doesn’t. I want all couples to not only have beautiful photographs, but minimize any stress and enjoy their day to the fullest.
