Scarlet O’Neil shares insights from her prolific career and highlights the success of the romantic and elegant wedding of Maria and Rich at Berkeley Church wedding venue Toronto.
How does your prolific experience as a successful lifestyle and editorial photographer interplay with your wedding photography?
For me, it’s about my clients. It’s about documenting the realness, the rawness and all the things that make up the couple and their story. I want everything to be unique and personal to who they are. I want them to see the photos and go “that’s us!”/
Your wedding day portraits find perspectives and viewpoints around the Berkeley Church venue that are so unique and personal. How do you achieve this signature fresh look for each couple?
It’s knowing my couple and knowing what areas work to reflect them and their style. I look for interesting light and because light always changes it allows me to shoot in different spots and create something unlike what I’ve already done.
Working as a creative in the event industry exposes you to many other creative professionals. In the case of this unique wedding what was your communication like with the various vendors and how did these exchanges enhance your experience?
Working with Renata is so much fun. Whenever I have a wedding with her I know it will be visually stunning, it will run perfectly and the couple is always rad. Couples hire people like their vendors (or at least should be!) so knowing Renata, I know her couples will be amazing!
This wedding reception could be viewed as a design driven experience with all the attention paid to the beautiful florals and wedding decor. How did you capture this so successfully in your photographs?
Shooting details on the wedding day is really important because it’s all the thought they’ve put into their day from months and months before the big day and ensuring it’s captured well is really important. Knowing how to ensure the colours are correct, that focus is paid to the right things and the ambience is also covered is really important. With so many weddings under my belt, shooting details is just another important part of the day!
A big part of the success of the wedding photographer is their ability to appreciate and perceive the subtle nuances and opportunities for moments and viewpoints to capture. How do you so successfully master and achieve this?
Being a wedding photographer means being ready for anything throughout the day. Being open to surprises, ready to roll and always paying attention allows for you to create unique photos true to the couple who’s day it is.
