Danijela Weddings discusses her creative process in capturing a glamorous joyful wedding at Airship37 event venue Toronto.
When you first met Dee and Jeff how would you describe your impressions of how they wanted to approach their wedding day and what were some of your first thoughts on how you would best capture this day?
Dee and Jeff are so much fun and they have great taste!! As we chatted we discovered we had lots of things in common and we bonded over our mutual love and appreciation for bold, geometric patterns and brutalist architecture. It also doesn’t hurt that they are just so cool and total hotties.
Your background in and love of photographic film processing translates into the success of your digital work. How was this evident in this collection of pictures?
The thing that I love about film is the unpredictability of it, and I absolutely love the “mistakes” that happen with film. It’s not easy to replicate that in digital because the medium itself is so precise but it sure it fun to try and get a little looser with it without forcing it too much. I’m essentially a purist at heart 🙂
There is a cinematic quality to your work. The films of Federico Fellini come to mind in his ability to capture the joy of life. What do you think of this comparison?
Oh wow, that’s an amazing compliment! If I could live in a Fellini movie I would do it in a heartbeat, ha ha!! I guess it becomes obvious that I’m influenced by it and I love the quite drama he invokes. I think that’s fully there on a wedding day, plus the joy of course.
The wedding had a stylish elegant design with fun whimsical elements. How did you best capture this in your work?
Dee and Annie from Madison and Ella (the sweetest woman you’ll ever meet!) did such a great job with this, with so many fun little details! I tried to capture a lot of them in use to add an element of realness and fun.
What makes an epic wedding picture in your experience?
An epic wedding picture is one where the subject lets you see a little bit of their realness and vulnerability. It could be a couple or a moment that’s happening, but I find capturing even a little grain of truth elevates that photo over anything posed.
The ability to stay focused and look for an interesting perspective to capture a wedding moment requires a lot of experience. What are some of your methods for advancing this practise?
I just try to connect with the people that I’m photographing, not just the couple but the guests too. This way see things I wouldn’t necessarily if I was just on the sidelines.
What do you study to develop your profession?
I’m addicted to photography art books! I also spend a lot of time studying and trying to understand the past masters of photography. I think knowing the history of the medium is very important.
What made this wedding experience unique and how did you interact with these wedding choices with your photography?
We all meshed so well way before the wedding day so I knew that on the day it really would be like hanging out with your best friends. It brings out the best in all of us.
You have a unique sensibility for capturing compelling wedding portraits. How do you accomplish this?
A lot of the times I use light to emphasize a moment with couple portraits. I find it interesting because it is a further representation of their day, the way the light was that day. It kind of makes it theirs.
What opportunities did Airship37 offer for unique wedding photography and how did you use this setting to its full potential?
I love the rawness of the space and the loft-like feel. It’s a complete contrast to the Distillery District right beside it and I think it fits cool, hip couples perfectly. I also love the light you get there as the sun is setting, it bathes the whole space in magic light!
How do you work with the changing light of the wedding day and maximize its potential? Secondly, how do you prepare for the day?
The only preparation I ever do about the light is knowing when the sun sets. That lets me know how the light will be at different parts of the day. Then I just use the light as best as possible to enhance what’s going on.
