Nikki Mills Photography shares Christina and Kyle’s elegant intimate love filled Berkeley Fieldhouse wedding.
Which picture out of the collection would you select for a framed print for the couple and why?
I love the photos we took at spadina house, especially in front of the greenhouse in black and white, Christina’s dress was so elegant and timeless and they just looked great there.
What informed the couples decision to shoot the wedding portraits album at Spadina house and how did this lovely collection end up working seamlessly with the whole days collection of pictures?
They were a very elegant couple but still very relaxed, which is actually how I would describe the Spadina house as a photo location; rambling old fashioned gardens, not overly manicured, and a charming building. It really is versatile and shines in the summer and fall especially.
“Christina + Kyle’s Berkeley Field House wedding was fun and relaxed, just like them. I have shot many weddings at the Berkeley Field House over the years – it’s a bright cheerful venue with great flow. Another benefit to a Berkeley Field House wedding is it’s located right in the heart of the city and has so many great photo locations around it.” Nikki Mills
This wedding although before covid-19 has some of the qualities of the intimate gatherings we are seeing currently and will see throughout this year. What is your take on some of the qualities of these choices ?
I think couples in general are following their own path when planning their weddings. Tradition doesn’t loom over couples the way it might have in the past and that’s leading to some very personal and fun events.
“Alyssa + Co. planned and coordinated their day and kept everything running smoothly.” Nikki Mills
The beginning of the reception is in daylight and so the album is in natural lighting. What was the intention of this choice and what was your process for capturing the gorgeous vibrant photographs?
I don’t actually set out with an intention for the look of portraits ahead of time, I would say compared to some photographers I don’t lean towards exclusively light or dark editing style. To me when you weave the changing of the time of day, the natural surroundings, and how it actually felt in the moment – that’s what gets me the most excited.

How do you balance having such a high technical achievement with your gear with getting a unique emotional connection with your couples that shows through in the album?
This is a kind question, thank you! I would say when you shoot a lot of weddings the more technical parts become intuitive to a large extent, or I have a small checklist I run through. This allows me to focus my energy on my couple and keeps me present. That being said I can still get in my head from time to time!
