Michelle at Magnolia Studios shares Tiffany and Tyler’s joyous stylish wedding day at Airship37
Tiffany and Tyler, a creative and fun couple had a joyous stylish wedding day at Airship37 wedding venue Toronto. Michelle at Magnolia Studios shares her experience in creating a unique stunning wedding album.
When was the first moment that you know the wedding of Tiff and Tyler was going to be so creative and fun?
Tiffany and Tyler were a fun couple from the very beginning. They described their story and their creative indie wedding style in our skype meeting. They spent time together in Peru in the early stages of their relationship so they weaved llamas throughout their wedding decor, so I could tell they appreciated creative details and personalized, meaningful touches. I love it when clients make their weddings very personalized! It tells so much about them and it allows me to weave these personal elements into their wedding day story. They showed their creative side by using gold dinosaurs at each table setting, they had an amazing donut dessert table filled with unique flavours, and they also did something I saw for the very first time – they arranged to create a one-take ‘music video’ of them lip singing to a collection of their favourite songs while including each and every wedding guest to sing and dance along with them. It was so cool!
What wedding day decisions did you observe them making at the planning stage that you feel paid off the most?
They planned a really awesome day with Laura Olsen Events. On the photography side of things I would have to say that Tiffany and Tyler allowed plenty of time for wedding party and couple photos and also scheduled in lots of time to fit in all of their extended family into their family photos. By giving room in their schedule it allowed us to switch gears and change plans once the weather decided to throw us all a curve ball. Our plan was to shoot at Cherry Beach, but as we waited for the rain to stop we had enough time to travel to and shoot at Underpass Park before making our way down to Cherry Beach once the rain subsided. Ultimately they had planned a go-with-the-flow day, which allowed leeway for spontaneity.
The setting for the wedding party prep was so fun and playful! How did you approach these getting ready pics?
Tiff and Tyler get all the credit for preparing such a creative and personalized day. They really made their wedding their own and took the time to find a getting ready location that incorporated their fun creativity, their originality and an all around cool vibe – which I LOVE! They are so fun, so creative, and very sweet, and I wanted to make sure that came across in their photos. I love using these personal touches to tell their story, so each time I shoot it is different and unique to the couple.
Having shot at Airship37 many times what do you like best about the venue and how has your approach of shooting there evolved?
I love shooting at Airship37! What I love most is how versatile the space is. Couples can really personalize and create the kind of wedding they want there. I really love creative, personalized weddings, and I find that everyone who I have shot with there has had that come through in their wedding. It really adds to the story telling of a couples day! I also love working with the beautiful, bright natural light in the venue, and since I have a bright, colourful style to my photography I think they mesh really well together.
There were two ceremonies that day at Airship37. What is it like having two ceremonies in one day in one venue. How do you stylistically capture each one in a distinct style and yet have a unified look to the visual story album.
They had a Chinese tea ceremony followed by their wedding ceremony, and used both spaces at Airship37. Both spaces are beautiful and work well together, and also offer a convenient way to do two ceremonies in one day, so it was very seamless and worked really well for their day.
There is a lot of natural light in the Airship37 space. How do you plan to use this quality of light in your pictures?
One of the best aspects of Airship is the beautiful, bright natural light. I fully use this in my photography since I have a bright, colourful style which goes hand in hand with the look of the space! I find that the couples I work with at Airship37 choose the space because they love the bright light, so I love to really capture that aspect of the space.
How do your bring in the skill sets you have from your other creative endeavours into your wedding photography?
I started out shooting fashion and music photography in the studio, so I definitely bring these creative styles into my photography when I shoot a wedding. I also provide plenty of direction where needed, so one of the most common pieces of feedback that I get from couples is how that made the process really easy and comfortable – which is the overall goal with my photography approach. I want couples to know that they don’t have to worry at all about the photography side of things
How do you direct your wedding couple in a way that leaves space for them to express themselves and yet respects what you know from experiences will produce the resulting in the photographs they are looking for?
Great question! On a wedding day there are a lot of really natural moments to shoot, and capturing this is the whole point and basis for wedding photography! Through these moments photographers can get a good sense of the day, so when it comes time to taking creative portraits, they will reflect their personalities and wedding day vibe. My couples love having fun with the photos, and capturing something unique, so this is something I strive for.
