How did you communicate the vision of your wedding to all the professionals involved?

We collected inspirational pictures we found on Pinterest, wedding blog sites and the internet in general, put them together in a folder on the iPad, and brought that thing to pretty much every vendor appointment. But in general I think the best way to ensure we’d be satisfied with all services and goods from all vendors is to do extensive research beforehand of their past work and customer reviews to ensure they align with our style. From there we just trust them to do what they do best!

You had such beautiful signage and decor sprinkled throughout Berkeley Fieldhouse that communicated instructions to your guests in a whimsical fun way. How did you plan this?

We had a list of ‘stations’ that we wanted to incorporate in the wedding to help guests move throughout the venue. I then pulled some graphic elements from the invitations we designed and sprinkled them throughout all the signage, for a more consistent look.

Your table settings are beautiful vignettes or glimpses into you and your husband’s interests and personalities. What was involved from the first inspiration to the final completion?

We took several ideas from mostly Pinterest and put them all together. Once we had an idea of the items we wanted to incorporate, we searched high and low, near and far, in attics, basements and antique markets for the perfect items to create the final table settings.

How did you choose your wedding photographer? How did you communicate your vision for how you wanted your big day captured?

We interviewed a shortlist of photographers we found through Google. Kate was last to be interviewed and turned out to be a preferred Berkeley Events vendor. She was the best fit for us personally and for what we wanted in our photos. To communicate our vision we had a couple of meetings over tea or ice cream with Kate and we talked about timing of the day and how we wanted a balance of formal pictures with families and candid photography that captures the emotions of the day. We also did an engagement shoot a couple of weeks before our wedding day to get to know each other better; and we found that to be really helpful in creating more natural photographs.

What is the story behind your gorgeous dress?

Most times I have a hard time making decisions on the spot. My mom and I went to numerous wedding gown shops and after a couple of months trying to make a decision I still wasn’t ready to purchase. We then took a couple of weeks off from dress shopping, and one day I decided to go back to one of the shops with a couple of my bridesmaids and I tried on a dress that I had tried on previously. That dress had been on my mind for a couple of weeks, and with my friends’ encouragement, I decided to purchase it!

There are some fun and touching series of mini-shoots throughout the venue property leading up to the wedding. How did you plan for these?

We visited the venue a couple of times during the planning process and we scoped out the venue for best lighting at the time of our first look photo. But the Berkeley Fieldhouse in general has such good access to natural light and there are so many cool nooks and crannies for photos that during the wedding day we just went with the flow.

What flowers were in your bouquet? You incorporated succulents and blooms together so beautifully. Did you have a florist?

I had different shades of peonies, billy buttons, various berries, lambs ear greens, some gold leaves and succulents in my bouquet. I decided to go with artificial flowers because we get to keep the bouquet as a memento after the wedding is done. We are so fortunate to have Will’s aunt, who used to work at a flower shop, help up with the flower arrangements. We bought most of the flowers at local craft store and brought it to Will’s aunt’s house for a fun day of flower arrangements.

Did you set a colour palette for your wedding design? How did you ensure all the elements would tie together in visual harmony?

We chose coral, teal and gold for our wedding colour palette; and we made sure that all decor, stationery and even the desserts on the dessert table had at least 2 of the colours. We used the gold more sparingly in the form of gold glitter since we don’t need too much of it to make things really pop.

What did you learn about yourself through the process?

All the planning can not really prepare you for the emotions and memories you will experience on the big day.

It was such a lovely and emotional day; all the hard work totally was worth it.

What did you want to happen with the catering for your wedding? What were your aspirations and how did it turn out?

My husband and I both enjoy eating out; so it was important that the food at our wedding be well presented, delicious, and well proportioned. After we went to our menu tasting we had no doubts that the guests would love the food as much as we did and that nobody would go home hungry! We were so pleased with the execution of the catering for that day; the food was tasty and plentiful, and the catering staff were just wonderful.

Your sweet table with the fun custom styled cake and beautiful desserts and marquee sign was a piece of art. What was involved in this design process?

The marquee letters were actually my husband’s weekend project as my bridesmaids and I went to Montreal for my bachelorette trip. To coordinate the style of the desserts we actually gave our vendors a copy of our invitation suite so they have a colour reference and ensure a harmonious display.

Guest engagement in your big day looks like it was high up on your day’s wishes. From the photo booth to the fun cocktail menus. How did these fun additions add to the experience of the wedding?

The guests really loved the photo booth! It gave them something fun to do between the ceremony and dinner; while we took formal family/group pictures. We put the photos into customized photo frames and that also served as reception favours for the guests.

The custom cocktail was inspired by our honeymoon destination and even guests who usually don’t drink alcohol (my mom included) loved the drink and was all that they drank that night.

How did Berkeley Fieldhouse as a setting for your wedding affect the styling and design of your wedding?

The Berkeley Fieldhouse was just perfect for the style of wedding that I dreamed of. We love the fact that the architectural elements are truly rustic & vintage but also well kept. The interior of the main hall is neutral white so it really served as a blank canvas for whatever decor/colour we incorporate.

What choice did you make in your planning process that you feel was a great ideas that payed off?

We wanted to have an intimate wedding in an intimate venue; we kept our guest list manageable (we ended up having 65 adults & 9 children as guests at the wedding) and had both the ceremony and reception at the Berkeley Fieldhouse. The small guest list ensured that we get to talk personally to each guest even with the bustling wedding itinerary, and having both the ceremony and reception at one venue saved us and the guests precious travel time that we used towards having more cocktails!

What advice would you give a newly engaged couple about their wedding planning?

Give yourselves a lot of time to enjoy being engaged and to plan your ideal wedding. We were engaged for 4 years; and while that might be a long long time for most people, it did give me a lot of time to shop and start a wedding decor collection. We had lots of time to make decisions, and in the end we felt the extra time we had prepared us mentally to really enjoy the best day of our lives.
